Yamaoka continues the winning streak apace with this latest long-player, a bright, pearlescent, glittering diamond of an album that would melt icecaps on Jupiter. The artist is no slouch when it comes to storming the studio; his now fairly sizeable catalog has encompassed all manners of electronica styles both minimal and maximal, atmospheric and rugged, earthy and alien. Haze, all thirteen parts of it, tells many tall tales, from the bubbly sequencer froth of the opening piece, to the more cinematic climes of the second track, and onward to the full-fledged anthropomorphic environments, teeming with shifting plateau, cascading across the verdant four minutes of track five. Yamaoka’s imagination seems truly fired up, however, when he hits us with the near ten-minute opus that is Part Seven, as an infinite reflecting pool of arpeggios appear like sun-dappled wavetops that slowly subside into the cold comfort of some alien deep blue sea, under which subtle mechanations portend the arrival of near-discernible forms, formations, and sprites barely glimpsed in the blinding reflections. It is at once contemplative yet confrontational, far from Eno’s paternal ambient, an ever-evolving work that mines tones filled with gelatinous colors that dazzle the retina. Prepare to energize.
