This one's a very special release. For those who may not know, Nick Currie (aka Momus) is a legendary Scottish pioneer of DIY music. The Guardian has described him as "the David Bowie of the art-pop underground" and needless to say, us at the UU HQ have been longtime admirers of this guy, so reissuing a record of his for our first run of releases feels like a bit of a triumph!
This album was recorded fairly early in the ol' 2020 pandemic — nobody knew what was going on or what this virus did to those unfortunate enough to catch it. We only knew that the world was taking a terrifying turn out there and that this thing had no end in sight. It was right around this time that Nick came down with the sickness himself.
"Vivid" sees Momus grappling with his own mortality and experiencing the terror of a terrible case of an illness that nobody knew all that much about at the time. One could easily liken this record to a "Blackstar" of sorts, but luckily that comparison wouldn't be quite apt — since Momus is still with us today!
This release comes with Utopia Unearthed's "digital liner notes," so you can scan a QR code inside the sleeve and be taken to a track by track breakdown and interview and conversation with Momus! Limited to only 120 copies ever produced, so grab one while you can!
