Words On Music presents Almost Charlie’s “All I Want For Christmas (Is To Be Alone)” – the debut holiday single by Berlin singer/multi-instrumentalist Dirk Homuth and New York City lyricist Charlie Mason.
The new single juxtaposes Homuth’s nimble, acoustic guitar work and soaring vocals with Mason’s downbeat diary of a narrator who would trade the usual trappings of the holidays – presents, meals, time with friends – for solitude:
I’m as thankful as can be / And yet if it were up to me… / All I want for Christmas / Is to reap what I have sown / All I want for Christmas / Is to be alone
The playful catchiness of Homuth’s melodies serves as a stark counterpoint to the narrator’s stance that the most welcoming holiday present would be his own absence.
Almost Charlie was formed in early summer 2003 when Homuth answered an Internet ad from Mason who was searching for a composer. Over the next 22 years the songwriting duo have written five albums with a strict division of lyricist and composer that brings to mind classic songwriting teams like Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Signposts: The Beatles, Kings of Convenience, I Am Kloot, Elliot Smith, Turin Brakes, Nick Drake.
