Release date: August 9, 2024
Signposts: The Cure, Joy Division, Factory Records. A release that has been decades in the works, Words On Music presents “The Gilded Infancy,” the first single from A Gentle Collapsing, the definitive recordings from the post-punk trio Remnant Three.
“The Gilded Infancy” is the album’s first track – launching the record with sporadic industrial noises coating dual basslines through the song’s four verses, diagramming a lineage to The Cure’s 17 Seconds. The song builds without the strike of a single cymbal crash, but instead through anticipation of the first note of an electric guitar that arrives in an affecting entrance three minutes into the work.
Words On Music first heard Remnant Three’s unreleased songs via cassettes exchanged more than 30 years ago. During the interim, the Minneapolis-based label released seminal 1980s post-punk albums from London’s The Lucy Show (1985's undone… and 1986's Mania) and Nebraska's For Against (1987's Echelons and 1988's December). At the turn of the century, the neophyte label had approached the long-defunct group to issue their fascinating, never-released album. Remnant Three agreed to this proposal provided the Fostex 8-track reel-to-reel source tapes could be properly restored to present the songs in their originally intended form.
Self-taught on their instruments for only two years before initiating these recordings, Remnant Three were nonetheless perfectionists. The craftsmanship found on these original recordings reflects the darker side of the post-punk sound of the late 70s early 80s.
