After a long hiatus, beloved Estonian electro-pop duo Popidiot returns with their
highly anticipated third album, Sweet Marmelade.
Known for their infectious blend of electropop and retrofuturistic flair, Sweet
Marmelade marks a subtle yet striking evolution for Matti Peura and Rein Fuks.
This time, the duo lands on softer sonic terrain—still buzzing with electricity, but
imbued with a new warmth and complexity.
Written and recorded jointly by Peura and Fuks over a period of five years, the album
came to life in various locations, including Tallinn, Helsinki, a remote cottage on
Kalvö Island, and the Scottish Highlands.
Though long-time bandmate Henrik Luuk, now based in Boston, did not take part in
the recording, he remained a steady source of moral support throughout the process.
In crafting Sweet Marmelade, Popidiot sought a sound that stayed true to their
original mission—to make bold, boundary-pushing pop music—while avoiding the
trap of repeating themselves. The result is what Fuks affectionately calls “a
song-and-dance party for indie nerds.” And indeed, Sweet Marmelade feels exactly
like that: danceable yet emotionally intelligent, quirky but never gimmicky. Rhythms
click and clatter like drum machines imagined in a Japanese lab circa 1983, while
analog synths melt together like tar on hot asphalt.
The album also features standout vocal contributions from Kristel Eplik (Pia Fraus),
Mariin Kallikorm (mariin k.), and Laura Junson (Laura Juno, Kalibriis), who add
both brightness and subtle emotional depth to the record’s sonic palette.
Sweet Marmelade was mixed by Erko Niit, with sonic contributions from Martin
Kikas and Taavi Peeter Liiv. Mastering was handled by Lauri Liivak, and the
dreamy, multi-layered visual identity was designed by Kaarel Vahtramäe.
This is an album for those who like their pop music with a crooked smile—sweet but
never cloying, melancholic but not downcast, danceable but never too easy. Sweet
Marmelade is everything a Seksound summer release should be: unexpected,
heartfelt, and unmistakably Popidiot.
