Lovecraftian planetscapes haunted by the ghosts of old ones past. The pastel scree of dying suns etched against a scorched sky. The squeals of mysterious ephemera stretched thin like rusted copper wire. And all this in the first few minutes of the epic first track of this gargantuan sonic opus by the enigmatic Resilience. Crafted in the finest post-Namlook tradition, with its burnished environs and alien filigree, this majestic work embodies all that Carpe Sonum, and Fax, the imprimatur that inspired it, stands for. The level of detailed sound design that inveighs this album with its near-infinite scope is truly something to behold. “Mode” is the very definition of space music in all its nuance and subsets: ‘space’ as in the vast uncertainties of the cosmos, in the hidden percolations its heavenly bodies move within, in the notion of desolate emptiness inhabited by the noises made by a thousand inimical life forms. As the track’s sequencers form and pulse, the artist lays down a wavering aural bed of oscillations, vibrations, and nimble patterns, a kaleidoscope of colors forever altering and transforming before your frontal lobes. “Arctic Divide” paints its own dreamy visuals of enveloping whiteness with gently evolving hues of differing synths and complimentary electronic piano, infused with an adjunct melancholy that is positively mesmerizing. And the closing twenty-one minutes of “Tunnelesque” bends lightwaves and brainwaves in equal measure, a space cruiser whose muzak machine programs prime-time Steve Roach, 90s ambient electronica, and the ancestral Teutonic pioneers' starcrossed hallucinations on perpetual repeat for its long-dead astronauts. Fills the space between your ears ever so brilliantly.
