Paul Mutchler, former guitarist and singer with The Lears (who had several releases via Get Hip / Lollipop / Misty Lane) got THE BELLTOWERS together with fellow guitarist Eddie Foeller in 2006. Eddie had known Paul since the mid eighties playing in various bands around their Orlando, Florida home base - he had met Marshall Huggins a bass player who could also sing and play keyboards and drummer Tom Miller and together they formed Little Bill. By 1998 Paul had also met with Marshall and Tom and played with them in Los Knievals which eventually led to the formation of THE BELLTOWERS, driven by their collective influences of The Byrds, Flamin` Groovies, Gene Clark, The Stems and The Headless Horsemen.
By 2007 they had made their live debut and released the EP "Demonstrations" to much acclaim - an acclaim that built relentlessly via their stunning live shows and the following EP`s "The Lily Pad Sessions" (2009) and "Look Away" (2010) - the latter including their own take on Flamin` Groovies "I Can`t Hide" and The Byrds " Thoughts and Words". The word spread across the Atlantic to the UK and Europe with many magazines like Shindig and Bucketfull of Brains leading the way as well as many blog sites like Expo 67, Flower Bomb Songs and Cavestones. Much college radio play came in the USA and in Europe - the band making many airplay charts.
Shindig said "Absolutely great - it`s the songs you know, they do the Beau Brummels / Byrds cross rather effortlessly"
Since then the band has unleashed various 7" singles and featured on a few compilation albums and the demand for a full length album just kept building. Now in 2015 that album - "Day Breakaway" has arrived, twelve originals that utterly nail what THE BELLTOWERS are all about. Full of twelve string Rickenbacker jangle, it may look back to the sounds of old but it has a bright and contempary new sonic attack and is packed with cool harmonies. The garage influences add a bit of fuzz and a touch of psychedelia, ile some songs have a pure pop edge.
Overall "Day Breakaway" is a refreshing blast of an album - moments of melancholy rub shoulders with moments of joy bound together by tunes that just buzz in your brain. THE BELLTOWERS have developed into a damn fine band - today Florida.......................tomorrow the world !!!
